Celebrate Onam with Tradition, Togetherness and Joy

Onam is one of Kerala’s most cherished festivals, celebrating tradition, harvest, family and togetherness. Observed over ten days during the Malayalam month of Chingam, the festival is traditionally associated with the annual homecoming of King Mahabali and the prosperity remembered from his reign. From beautifully decorated homes and colourful Pookalams to traditional food, cultural performances and family gatherings, Onam brings people together through shared customs and joyful celebrations. The story of King Mahabali is central to the spirit of Onam. According to tradition, Mahabali was a generous and respected ruler whose kingdom was remembered for prosperity and equality. Lord Vishnu appeared before him as Vamana and asked for three paces of land. Mahabali offered his own head when there was no space remaining for the final step. The legend says that Mahabali was later granted permission to visit his people once every year. Onam celebrates this annual homecoming and continues to preserve the values of generosity, humility and devotion.
The Pookalam, a colourful floral carpet, is one of the most recognisable traditions of Onam. Families traditionally create floral designs at the entrance of their homes, with the decoration developing throughout the ten-day celebration. Creating a Pookalam can become a meaningful family activity. Children can help arrange flowers while parents and grandparents share stories about Onam celebrations from earlier generations. The simple act of creating something together reflects the joy and togetherness at the heart of the festival. Preparing the home is an important part of the festive atmosphere. Families may clean their homes, decorate entrances, arrange flowers and prepare a peaceful space for prayer and traditional worship. Traditional essentials such as Rengas Pooja Manjal, Rengas Red Kungumam, Rengas Sandal Powder, Rengas Viboothy Powder and Rengas Abishega Powder can be included in your pooja preparations, bringing familiar devotional elements into meaningful family traditions.
Fragrance is also an important part of creating a peaceful and welcoming festive atmosphere. Rengas Lemon Sambrani, Rengas Rose Sambrani, Rengas Jasmine Sambrani, Rengas Lavender Sambrani, Rengas Neem Sambrani, Rengas Thulasi Sambrani, Rengas Sandal Sambrani, Rengas Champa Sambrani and Rengas Marikolunthu Sambrani can naturally complement prayer spaces and moments of reflection during the festive season. No Onam celebration feels complete without Onasadya, the traditional festive feast served on a banana leaf. The meal brings together a variety of vegetarian dishes, including curries, vegetables, pickles, savouries and traditional sweets. Rengas product range includes Rengas Nattu Sakarai, Rengas Tepung Suji, Rengas Atta Flour, Rengas Honey, Rengas Agar-Agar and Rengas Appalam, which can be part of everyday and festive food preparations
. Preparing and sharing Sadya is an important family experience. Different generations can take part in cooking, serving and enjoying the meal together. The tradition reflects the spirit of hospitality, abundance and sharing that makes Onam special. Onam celebrations extend beyond the home. Traditional games, music, dance and cultural performances bring communities together. Kathakali, Thiruvathirakali and Pulikali are among the cultural traditions associated with the festive season. Vallamkali, the famous snake boat race, is another major attraction of Onam celebrations in Kerala. These activities give younger generations an opportunity to experience Kerala’s cultural heritage while families and communities celebrate together. Festivals become meaningful when traditions are shared from one generation to another. Onam gives parents and grandparents an opportunity to introduce children to the story of Mahabali, the beauty of Pookalam, the preparation of Sadya and the importance of family togetherness.
Whether celebrated in Kerala or by Malayali families around the world, Onam continues to bring people closer through food, faith, culture and shared memories. The beauty of Onam lies in its simple message of welcoming, sharing and togetherness. From the first flowers arranged for the Pookalam to the family gathering around the Onasadya, every tradition creates an opportunity to celebrate what connects us. By preserving meaningful customs, sharing stories and celebrating together, families can keep the spirit of Onam alive for generations to come.
